Zo geeft Aard een reactie op het plan van Innovatieplatform Twente om Nederland in 2020 weer terug hebben in de top 5 innovatieve landen van de wereld. Hij stelt onder andere: “Een goed initiatief dat absoluut zal bijdragen aan het urgentiebesef dat innovatie essentieel is om economische en maatschappelijk vooruitgang te bewerkstelligen. Maar aan besef ontbreekt het eigenlijk al jaren niet. De belangrijke vervolgstap is het omzetten van de visie naar betekenisvolle plannen waar ondernemers mee uit de voeten kunnen. Zonder deze vertaalslag door samenwerkende overheden, kennisinstellingen en bedrijfsleven zal het plan helaas bij mooie woorden blijven”.

In een andere podcast gaat Aard in op het aantrekken van buitenlandse bedrijven naar Nederland (een belangrijke aanbeveling in het plan van het Innovatieplatform). Hierover zegt hij bijvoorbeeld “Dit is een belangrijk punt waar we met VentureLab Twente al ervaring mee hebben. Het is onze visie dat in Nederland de cultuur en structuur aanwezig is van waaruit Aziatische en Amerikaanse bedrijven Europese markten uitstekend kunnen betreden. Daar profiteren wij als Nederland ook van in de vorm van werkgelegenheid. Voor Nederland zou het goed zijn als er meer van dergelijke ‘hotspots’ bijkomen”, aldus de hoogleraar Innovatief Ondenemerschap aan de Universiteit Twente.

In America, most incubators focus on square meters instead of programs or services for their client companies. The VentureLab Twente programme leads the trend of assisting their shooting stars in multiple and tailor-made ways, where the community plays a key role. Especially the possibility to join without fixed idea and the intensity of coaching and availability of trainings can be called unique.

Considering the above, VLT participants and staff can be sincerely proud of what we have achieved so far. And we believe that there is much more to come. The conference left us with very valuable contacts to improve our program even more. So as Walt Disney has said: ‘Stop talking and start doing!’

Alexander Rinnooy Kan is als lid van het Innovatieplatform en voorzitter van de Sociaal Economische Raad openingsspreker bij het congres. Rinnooy Kan werd begin december 2009 door Trouw voor de derde keer uitgeroepen tot Nederlands meest invloedrijke man. De Australische Clive Davenport (directeur grootste onderzoeksprogramma nanotechnologie Australië) vertelt over het masterplan om Australische topsporters met behulp van nieuwe technologie nog beter te laten presteren op de Olympische Spelen. Daarnaast vertelt Rick Harwig (voormalig CTO Philips) over open innovatie. Het programma loopt door in de Innovatielezing van de Universiteit Twente.

The Twente region and Innovation Platform Twente are also expected to contribute to VentureLab Twente to bring subsidies to €3.5 million.

The subsidies mean that costs for participants can be kept as low as possible!

And… the VentureLab Twente Incubator hereby has been granted this Soft Landings designation for the first time!

Now in its fifth year, the Soft Landings program recognizes incubators with proven ability to help nondomestic companies enter the incubator’s domestic market.
NBIA’s Soft Landings designations are effective for two years; programs must reapply biennially for continuing designation.

While there was no set number of selections possible, the panel did not award the designation to all that applied. The selection of the two new designees brings the total number of programs earning the Soft Landings designation to 16.

The NBIA is the world’s leading organization advancing business incubation and entrepreneurship. The next deadline for Soft Landings applications will be June 11, 2010.

In two days the group got lots of information to start their future as owners of a high-tech high-potential venture.

• On Thursday Pim Paffen, from CDC Nederland, explained the use of an assessment and a personal development plan in the personal development training. In the evening the VentureClass by Paula Englis was on the agenda.
• Saras Sarasvathy, Associate Professor (Darden Graduate Business School, University of Virginia, USA) was in action on Friday with “Strategy Process: Planning vs emergence” and “Equity ownership and control issues” as topics for the training. See Saras work on a short video.

According to some of the ‘fresh’ entrepreneurs the first days were “intense” and some “hard work” to begin with. But VLT made sure it was not without the necessary amount of food, fun & friends.
